Project Description

Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department

Theatre Performance cum Stage Effect Demonstration and Scenography Workshop

Theatre Space is best known for its creative use of space and technical artistry on stage. The company will stage a new version of a theatre performance, successfully presented in 2010, that introduces students to the structure and facilities of the Studio Theatre of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Written and directed by core member Bee Wan, the play demonstrates the application of lighting, sound and special effects through imaginative plots and ingeniously designed scenes. Throughout the performance, each element of stage technology is explained by the host as it is used. Students are sure to be inspired as they learn about the technical stage arts and the performance will stimulate their interest in the performing arts. The audience and performers can also share ideas during the Q&A session on viewing and producing stage performances.

Derived from the ancient Greek “skene” (scene) and “grapho” (description), “Scenography” denotes a description or record of a scene, stage or space. The key concept is the relationship between people and space. Applied to the theatre, it is about the utilisation of all the creative elements of the stage, including setting, wardrobe, lighting, images, colour, scent, sound.
In this workshop, presenter Bee Wan will explain and demonstrate technical stage arts and their operation, and in particular professional sound and lighting techniques. All stage design elements – setting, lighting and sound and their interaction – will be discussed from a scenographic perspective.

Holder of a Master’s degree in Scenography from the London Institute, Bee Wan is a veteran theatre worker and production manager with Theatre Space.
